“Because Helena,” she says.
“Because Helena and her brother ran everything back then.”
She points faintly toward the party outside. “She wasn’t just a host. She was the family’s knife.”
The room turns colder.
You remember Helena’s name from old arguments, old business meetings, old “family” dinners that tasted like control.
Helena was always around after Isabela “died,” comforting you, advising you, pushing paperwork.
“Tell me,” you say, and your voice is dangerous now.
Lívia swallows and nods.
“Isabela didn’t die,” she repeats.
“She disappeared.”
Her eyes shine. “They said she was unstable. They said she was ‘a risk’ to the family’s image.”
Your hands tremble.
“Who said?”
Lívia’s answer is a knife.
“Helena,” she says.
“And the board that signed her away.”
You feel bile rise.
Because you realize something horrible: the rich don’t always kill with bullets.
Sometimes they kill by erasing names, locking doors, rewriting records.
Davi tugs Lívia’s sleeve.
“Mom,” he whispers, “why are you crying?”
Lívia kneels and kisses his forehead, voice breaking.
“Because I’m tired, my love,” she whispers.
“And because sometimes grown-ups do evil things.”
You look at the boy again.
The birthmark.
Your wife had it. You have it. And now he does too.
You swallow hard.
“How old is he?” you ask.
“Seven,” Lívia replies, voice thin.
Seven years.
Your brain does the math and finds a door you never wanted to open.
Seven years means Isabela was alive long after her “death.” It means she could have had a child. It means someone hid it.
Your voice turns quiet.
“Isabela is Davi’s mother,” you say.
