Enemies of the Joint: What robs you of your mobility, and how can you regain it?

Enemies of the Joint: What robs you of your mobility, and how can you regain it?

Enemy No. 2: Dehydration: when the joints lose their lubrication.

Many people think they drink enough water, but in reality, most people don’t. Synovial fluid, the “oil” in our joints, is made up mostly of water. Without it, cartilage wears down like dried-out rubber. As we age, our sense of thirst diminishes, so our bodies simply stop needing fluids.

Tip: Drink a glass of water right after you wake up; this will revitalize your joints. Add a pinch of Himalayan salt to help your cells retain moisture better.

Enemy No. 3: Lack of exercise (hypodynamy)

Unlike muscles, cartilage is not supplied with nutrients via the bloodstream, but absorbs them through movement. You can think of a joint as a sponge: it only “drinks” when it is compressed and relaxed. Without movement, cartilage atrophies.

Recommendation: Gently move your shoulders, hips, and knees every morning. Avoid overexertion; this movement simply lubricates the joints and keeps them flexible.
