Chief Ruiz stepped fully into the room, his voice steady but firm.
“Ma’am, put the child down. Now.”
Margaret blinked, confusion flickering across her face. “What did you call her?”
Ruiz did not look at Margaret. His eyes remained on me, respectful, almost protective.
“Judge Carter,” he repeated. “Are you requesting assistance?”
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Margaret’s grip on Noah loosened just slightly.
“Judge?” she whispered, as if the word itself were offensive.
I pressed a hand gently to my bleeding lip, my voice calm despite the tremor in my body.
“Yes, Chief. I am.”
Ruiz turned to his officers. “Escort this woman out. Contact hospital administration and notify law enforcement. Document everything.”
Margaret laughed once, brittle and disbelieving. “This is absurd. My son pays for this room. She’s nothing without him.”
Ruiz’s gaze hardened. “This suite is reserved under federal judicial security protocol.”
The color drained from her face.
“You assaulted a sitting federal judge in a secured recovery unit,” he added evenly. “And attempted to remove a minor from his lawful guardian.”
The officers gently but firmly took Noah from her arms and returned him to me. Another guided Margaret toward the door as her composure shattered into outrage.
“You lied!” she shouted at me. “You let us think you were dependent!”
I looked at her, not with anger, but with clarity.
“I never lied,” I said quietly. “You just never bothered to ask who I was.”
As the door closed behind her protests, Chief Ruiz stepped closer.
“Would you like to press charges, Your Honor?”
I glanced down at my twins, their tiny fingers curling instinctively against my hospital gown.
“Yes,” I replied.
