My heart sank. A video?
Caleb’s lawyer immediately stood up.
“Your Honor, we oppose it…”
“I’ll look into that,” the judge interrupted. Then he turned to Harper. “But tell me first: why doesn’t your mother know?”
His chin was trembling.
“Because Dad told me not to tell anyone,” she whispered.
Caleb turned pale.
My hands were shaking so much that I had to hold onto the edge of the table.
“Officer,” the judge said firmly, “please bring the child’s device.”
Harper stepped into the courtroom, small in this immense space, and held out the tablet with both hands, as if offering something sacred.
When the video started playing on the courtroom screen, my heart raced so much that my ears hurt.
The image appeared.
Our kitchen. At night.
