Once upon a time, in a small village, there was a young girl named Ogei. Ogei was only 14 years old when she started seeing a boy named Emeka, who was 18. Despite the severe warnings from her mother, Ogei would sneak out to see Emeka whenever no one was at home. When she visited him, he made her beautiful promises and kissed her. Ogei felt so safe with him that she did everything Emeka asked of her. He took advantage of her naivety and slept with her every time they met.
Emeka lived with his uncle because his parents’ house was too far away. The situation became more and more serious because Ogei no longer listened to her parents. She spent most of her days with Emeka. Overwhelmed by the situation, Ogei’s father went to Emeka’s uncle’s house with police officers. Emeka was arrested and summoned. After asking him several questions, the police officer decided to release him on bail, but his uncle refused to let him return to his house. He was tired of his behavior. Emeka went back to his parents’ home in another village.
A few weeks after Emeka left, Ogei realized that she was pregnant. Her father was so furious that he chased her out of the house and told her never to return. She knelt down and began pleading with her mother, but she too refused to listen anymore.
“You know you still don’t have the means to live on your own, yet you spread your legs for a man. Get out of my sight. Go and find the one who got you pregnant, nonsense. Please, Mama, forgive me, it was an accident.”
Her mother picked up a stone and threatened to throw it at her. Ogei ran as fast as she could to escape and save herself. She walked sadly until she heard someone calling her from behind. It was Aunt Nzi. She turned around and walked toward her with her head bowed. She was ashamed. Aunt Nzi went into her hut, then came back out a few minutes later. She handed a banknote to Ogei.
“Here, I hope this can help you.”
“Thank you, Auntie,” she said before continuing on her way to an unknown destination.
After wandering through the village for hours in tears, she remembered Emeka’s uncle. She immediately went to his house. She knocked timidly on the door, and he came out of the hut.
“Ogechi, what are you doing here? What’s going on? Come in, please, and explain.”
