Get out of my house. You bring bad luck.
Natalia felt those words as if someone had emptied a bucket of ice water onto her chest. Outside, the rain had just stopped, and the street in front of the small house was still a muddy mess, full of dirty puddles and potholes. The rusty gate looked old and tired, as if it had spent years crying rust. Inside, in the narrow living room where there was barely enough space for a worn-out sofa and a wobbly table, Jerry stood by the door with his tie loosened and a hardness in his eyes she did not recognize. They were not the eyes of the man who, three years earlier, had promised her that even if they had nothing, he would never leave her alone.
Natalia placed a hand on her belly. Her pregnancy already felt heavy. She walked slowly, slept badly, breathed with effort. It was her first child.
—Jerry… what are you saying? —she whispered, her voice so fragile it seemed ready to break in the air.
He let out a dry, cruel laugh.
—What you heard. You no longer fit into my life. I got the job I always dreamed of, and I’m not going to keep dragging myself down with a woman like you. I’m moving up, Natalia. You stayed down.
She opened her mouth, but at first nothing came out. Then, with tears gathering in her eyes, she managed to say:
—I’m your wife… and I’m pregnant.
Jerry looked at her with contempt.
—I don’t even know if that child is mine.
Natalia stared at him without understanding. She felt the world split beneath her feet.
—What did you just say?
She had no time to process it. Jerry stepped toward her and shoved her hard. Natalia stumbled backward, bringing both hands to her belly. A flash of pain twisted her face.
—Jerry, please! Don’t push me! The baby!
—That baby is your problem too —he spat.
Natalia’s knees trembled, but she managed to stay standing. She looked at him desperately, searching for some trace of the man she had loved. She found nothing.
—Where do you want me to go? —she begged—. I don’t have parents, Jerry. I don’t have brothers or sisters. I don’t have family. Where am I supposed to go like this?
