“I didn’t do anything wrong!” she screamed as the police led her away. “This is a mistake. You can’t do this to me!”
Obie stepped forward with a calm smile.
“A mistake? No. Your true intentions have finally been exposed.”
She glared at him, her eyes blazing.
“You little rat. This is all your fault, meddling in things that do not concern you.”
“I belong here,” Obie replied steadily. “This is my father’s house, and you tried to steal it. You tried to steal everything from us, just as you tried to steal our peace and happiness.”
“Peace and happiness?” she laughed wildly as the officers held her. “You were both a burden. I was only taking what should have been mine.”
“Yours?” Obie laughed quietly. “The only thing that belongs to you now is a long stay in prison. Enjoy the peace and quiet there. It is certainly more than you ever gave us.”
Her face twisted in furious silence as the police led her away. Her protests meant nothing.
Obie’s stepmother, the woman who had brought so much sorrow into their lives, was arrested on the spot. She was charged with fraud and forgery, serious crimes that carried heavy punishment.
A few weeks later, the court sentenced her to a long prison term. Her children, Obie’s young stepbrother and stepsister, were taken in by their kind aunt, who promised to raise them with love and care.
With the dark cloud finally gone, Obie and his father left the rented house and returned to their real home, the grand house that now felt light and welcoming again.
As they stepped through the front door, Obie’s father placed an arm around him.
“Obie,” he said, his voice full of emotion, “you are truly my son. You saved my life and brought us home again. I am so proud of you.”
Obie smiled, feeling a warmth he had not felt in years.
“We are a family again, Father.”
