While I Was In Labor, My Husband Said, “If It’s A Girl, Don’t Come Back.”

Jason felt the blood drain from his face. The preamble to the prenup seemed like ancient history now—something Emily’s family had insisted on, something he had signed without really reading because he had been in love at the time, or what he thought was love, or what felt like love in those early days before he started taking her for granted.

“Infidelity? You can’t prove anything,” Jason said, but his voice had lost its confidence. “This is ridiculous. We’ll go to court. I have lawyers.”

The attorney opened his briefcase and handed him several glossy photographs.

Jason recognized the hotel suite in Aspen instantly. The balcony. The view of the mountains. The room he had just come from. In one photo, he and Brittany were stepping out onto the balcony together, his arm around her waist. In another, they were unmistakably close, their body language screaming an intimacy that couldn’t be explained away as professional.

“Mrs. Walker hired a private investigator months ago,” Mr. Reynolds said. “She suspected the truth. And last night’s phone call—your instruction for her to ‘go live with her parents’ while she was actively in labor—was recorded by Mrs. Thompson, who was present. The judge signed an emergency eviction order this morning.”

Jason stood frozen on the driveway of the house that was no longer his, holding photographs that documented his betrayal, understanding with absolute clarity that his world had shifted on its axis in the time it had taken him to fly to Aspen and lie beside another woman.

“What happens to the company?” he asked quietly, because the company had been his pride. It wasn’t as big as Emily’s family business, but it was his. He had founded it. He had built it with his own hands.

“Mrs. Walker intends to take majority control of any enterprise you established using funds from the trust. Your position will be reviewed by her board of directors. You may remain in an advisory capacity, depending on their assessment.”

Jason tried to process this. He tried to calculate how many years it would take to rebuild his life, how much of his net worth would evaporate, what he would be left with.

The answer was: very little.
