At first, I was furious. But as we talked, the truth emerged. Emily admitted she had been skipping school because of ongoing bullying. The school responded promptly, beginning an investigation and outlining support measures. It wasn’t an instant fix, but it was a start. Most importantly, we stopped acting separately and began working as a team. That experience taught me that protecting a child sometimes means listening first — and standing beside them, not ahead of them.
