PART 7 — A Visit From the Police
One afternoon, months later, there was a knock on their door.
When Javier opened it, he was surprised to see the same police officer who had taken the report about the money.
“Good afternoon,” the officer said with a friendly smile.
“I just wanted to check in.”
He stepped inside and looked around the small apartment.
His eyes stopped on the armchair.
“So that’s the famous chair,” he said with a chuckle.
Ana laughed softly.
“Yes. It looks much better now.”
The officer nodded.
“You two did the right thing reporting the discovery,” he said.
“Not many people would have done that.”
Javier shrugged modestly.
“It was the honest thing.”
Before leaving, the officer said something they would never forget.
“You know,” he said, “I’ve been doing this job for twenty years. Most of the time I see the worst side of people.”
He looked at the armchair again.
“But sometimes I get to see the best.”
PART 8 — The Second Surprise
Spring arrived slowly that year.
Snow melted from the streets.
Trees began turning green again.
One afternoon Ana received an unexpected phone call from the nursing home.
The director spoke with excitement in her voice.
“You’re not going to believe this,” she said.
“Someone made another anonymous donation to our facility.”
Ana smiled.
“That’s wonderful.”
“Yes,” the director replied.
“But there’s more.”
“They said they were inspired by your story.”
Ana was speechless.
Their simple decision had inspired someone else to do good.
Javier looked at her quietly after she hung up the phone.
“You see?” he said softly.
“Kindness multiplies.”
