My husband filed for divorce as if he were initiating a lawsuit.

And then there was Caleb, who was looking straight into the camera and smiling in a way I had never seen him do before.

Then his voice filled the courtroom:

“If you tell your mother,” he said calmly, “I’ll make sure you never see her again.”

The silence that followed was oppressive and suffocating.

The judge paused the video. She looked at Caleb. Then at me. And finally at Harper.

“The hearing is postponed,” he announced. “And this court will take immediate action.”

I didn’t need to say a word that day. 

My daughter spoke on behalf of both of us.

And there, in that silent room, I understood:
